SAFETY
Range officer controls all shooting - when to come to line, load, shoot, and retrieve/pull. This can be done by voice or whistle. Should an officer not be present, designate one in your party. Commands are described fully on the sign at Practice Range.
Check your equipment before stepping to the shooting line. Bow is mechanically sound. String is not frayed. Arrows are proper length and straight, and all points are tight. Bow should be strung before coming to the shooting line. All testing of equipment and form should be done on the range "Form Wall" before joining a shooting course.
All arrows stay in quiver until ready to shoot. Bows not in use are stationed on storage rack. No dry firing of bows. Protect arrows by properly handling them by the nock. Be SURE of your target and that it is safe to shoot at, and is thick enough to stop your arrow. Be SURE the area around and beyond your target is clear before shooting. Never draw a bow if anyone is in front of the shooting line.
When given the command to commence shooting, shoot only the target directly in front of you, no angle shooting. Always point the arrow in a safe direction, either at the ground or downrange at the target. NO SKY DRAWS - no arrow is drawn pointed above your target, to prevent accidental long distance release. Use proper shooting form.
When done shooting, place the bow in the shooting line stand or hang up on hooks, and step back from the shooting line. When all participants have finished shooting and have stepped back from the line, the range officer gives a "clear" command and then the retrieve or "pull" command.
To retrieve arrows, walk forward to the target, picking up any arrows on the ground (your own and all others as well) so as not to accidentally damage them. Only one archer should pull arrows from the target at a time. All others stand back away. If an arrow went past the target, make a mental note when you fired it of the trajectory. Mentally mark the course and possible impact point to be able to retrace. Once the target is clear of arrows, all archers should assist in tracking any still missing. Should an archer be shooting alone and no one else seems to be at the range, place your bow infront of target face should you need to go look for an arrow - this notifies a new archer arrival that someone is downrange.
Once all arrows have been collected, stand behind the shooting line until the range officer gives the command to resume shooting.
When done shooting for the day, police your area of debris and equipment. Any equipment left should be collected and deposited at the range Trading Post. If someone is in an unsafe situation, help them by reminding them of the rules and regulations. If someone reminds you, thank them.
3D Woods Course
We ask anyone who will be shooting in the woods (area behind Field Range and Form Wall) to please wear an article of Hunter Orange clothing for safety. There are several vests available at the Trading Post and target shed. The Orange strobe light should also be switched on to announce to all arriving shooters that someone is down range. Please respect if one range is occupied that you choose another until safety issues are okay.
